DG TRAD
The 2008 annual meeting of IAMLADP is to be hosted by the translation service (DG TRAD) of the European Parliament. The event will take place in Strasbourg, the seat of the European institution, from 23 to 25 June 2008.
The European Parliament is the only institution to practise full multilingualism on such a broad scale and is one of the largest employers of translators in the world. The work of the 1268 staff members in the DG enables the Parliament to satisfy its obligations regarding multilingualism, which represents one of the democratic foundations on which the European Parliament is based. It is thanks to the DG's 770 translators that linguistic equality may be maintained amongst all European citizens and cultural and linguistic diversity respected.
DG TRAD ensures that all documents relating to Parliament's role as co-legislator and one of the two arms of the budgetary authority are drawn up in all official languages of the EU. Translation of documents constitutes an essential part of the legislative process and the Lisbon treaty, once ratified, will increase the legislative power of Parliament, rendering the role of DG TRAD in the EU legislative process even more crucial.
