DG TRAD
Documents which are translated consist mainly of plenary documents and committee documents, such as agendas, draft reports, amendments, adopted reports, opinions, resolutions, written and oral questions, minutes and reports of proceedings, notices to Members. DG TRAD also translates documents of other political bodies, such as the joint parliamentary assemblies consisting of Members of the European Parliament and national MPs or elected representatives of third countries as well as decisions by the European Ombudsman.
Upholding multilingualism whilst maintaining efficiency and keeping costs to a reasonable level is a difficult balancing act, especially in the context of recent enlargements. The Parliament's 2006 Code of Conduct on Multilingualism enables DG TRAD to improve efficiency of the service it provides and maximise use of language resources. The Code specifies deadlines for translations, which facilitates prioritisation of certain document types thus enabling the DG to manage its fluctuating workload. It also outlines the principle of "controlled full multilingualism", whereby in cases when a less common language combination cannot be covered directly, documents are translated via a relay language: English, French or German.
