Sustainable Meetings

In response to the United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's call in 2007 for a joint UN effort to use energy more efficiently and to eliminate wasteful practices, the UN and other international organizations have been putting together and implementing policies and plans in order to achieve green operational goals.

Building on these experiences the United Nations Environment Programme, in collaboration with IAMLADP and ICLEI, has produced the Green Meeting Guide to share the lessons learned, and to propose clear and easy steps for replication in other gatherings within or outside the UN system.

The Guide focuses in particular on the most common type of meetings within the UN and other international organizations: small and medium sized meetings with up to 200 participants and provides arguments, practical guidance and examples of meetings gone “green” in the UN system and beyond.
